This title explains exactly how I feel. “Oh Winter, really? You came back? You shouldn’t have, really.”
I know I live in Michigan. I should be prepared. I should embrace the four season. But the thing is, there are not four seasons here. There is springsummerfall and WINTER. I knew it was coming, but with frigid temps over the last few weeks, and a touch of snow, I am having a tough time adjusting. I never liked change. I’ll get used this, I’m sure. I mean, I better since this glorious season will last for nearly six months.
I had forgotten about last year’s wretched “polar vortex” and “snowpocalypse”. My mind seems to handle winter like childbirth. Once it’s behind you, you forget about it and think fondly of it. But the difference is, childbirth is one day (depending on how kind the labor gods are to you). But winter, oh dear winter, lasts for much longer.
I have plans for finding the silver linings of winter, but first, let me rant about why I H-A-T-E winter!
1. You can’t just run outside in whatever you’re wearing. You must bundle up and bundle the kids. You all feel like sausages stuffed into casing that it is just a little too snug. Then, when you get inside, you start sweating. You have to strip off the layers, inevitably misplacing one glove. By the time you disrobe, you need to brave the elements again. This process of suiting, un-suiting, and re-suiting is particularly annoying when you try to run errands.
2. In Michigan, the sun is lazy. The sun takes a six month break from its job. I wish I could do that. Then, when that lazy, good-for-nothing sun decides to appear, and you think just maybe you can handle winter, you look at your car thermometer. It’s 12 degrees with a wind chill of minus one zillion. WTF.
3. Driving in snow and ice. I’ll admit, I have quite the fear of winter driving. But what is even more annoying, is the jerk in the F-150 flying by you like there is nary a snowflake on the ground. Thank you sir, thank you for putting my life in jeopardy.
4. I also hate how plans get thwarted by weather. “Why yes, I would love to come to your super awesome holiday party. We even got a babysitter. Oh wait….we can’t come now…snowpocalypse had other plans. AWESOME. We are snowed in”. Wah wah. I hate when this happens. I’m the kind of person who wants to do what I want to do, when I want. Winter interferes with this…and it annoys me.
BUT now, for the optimism! Here’s how I’m going to *attempt* to
survive enjoy winter:
Do winter sports…snowshoeing, skiing, cross-country skiing….Maybe snow shoveling counts too?!
Drink warm cocktails and red wine. Tis the season, right?
Makes s’mores in the fireplace.
Hang with lots of family and friends, particularly over the holidays.
What are your favorite ways to enjoy winter?
