Although the first trimester of pregnancy brings excitement, (“yay, there’s a line on the pee stick”) it also brings a whole host of unwelcome symptoms, particularly for those of us who have struggled with morning sickness and drop-dead fatigue. In general, I try to remain optimistic and active during pregnancy, but my motivation and enthusiasm have certainly been put to the test during the first trimester. In fact, in my first pregnancy, I declared something to the like of, “If I feel this way the whole pregnancy, I’m never getting pregnant again.”
Alas, I have lived to tell the tale, and am embarking on the second trimester of my second (!) pregnancy. Yes, that was a baby announcement. So I come to you with some tried and true tips for surviving the *joys* of the first trimester, particularly for those struggling with nausea and fatigue.
1. Most importantly, repeat this mantra…”THIS TOO SHALL PASS.”
When the days of nausea and undeniable fatigue pummel you day after day, remind yourself that yes, this too shall pass. The crazy appetite, carb-intense cravings, and disdain for salad will fade. Come the second trimester, you will eat a vegetable again. Promise. For those who suffer these symptoms throughout their pregnancy, you are warriors. I simply do not know how you do it.
