I try to buy and eat organic produce. But DANG, it can sure get pricey. I really struggle with buying healthy food without going flat-broke. Like you don’t already know, but eating healthy ain’t cheap. Fresh food is often way more expensive than a box of macaroni and cheese or a preservative-laden microwave meal, which is sad, but that’s a long rant for another day.
One way I save on produce is by purchasing in-season produce. For one, it tastes waaaaaaaaay better. Late-August tomatoes are so much sweeter and flavorful than January tomatoes. Second, produce is much cheaper while in season.
I also use the Environmental Working Group’s (EWG) list of the Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen. Basically, the Dirty Dozen lists the 12 most contaminated fruits and vegetables. To avoid pesticides, it is best to buy the organic version of these fruits and veggies.

And….if your budget feels a little tight, the Clean Fifteen are the fruits and vegetables on which it is rare to find pesticides. So save your $$$$.
